Farming of blue mussels, oysters and seaweed in Kerteminde Bay

Kerteminde Seafarm

Kerteminde Seafarm was established in 2017 by Mads Hecter with a vision to establish and develop a cultivation system that could be used for Regenerative Ocean Farming, combining sustainable food production with active improvement of the marine environment, climate and biodiversity.

The establishment of the facility began in 2018 with longline systems developed for the farming of mussels. These systems were further developed to also be used to cultivate other low-trophic species such as oysters and seaweed.

Production

We produce:

The brown algae sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima), which is the seaweed species that gives the greatest yield and is most developed for production on longlines.

Blue mussels, which are the most common mussel species in Denmark.

The native oyster species: Flat oysters.

Projects

Kerteminde Seafarm is a partner in various research projects within Low-trophic aquaculture (LTA). Low-trophic species are characterized by not requiring feed or medication and typically have a beneficial effect on the marine environment and climate by absorbing nutrients and CO2. It is also assumed that these species locally where they are farmed, create greater biodiversity.
